Why swapping cereal for eggs might stop you snacking

To breakfast, or not to breakfast?

There’s always a lot of debate about breakfast. Some studies have shown a link between skipping breakfast and an increased risk of being overweight; other studies have found no effect of eating breakfast on weight loss.

Despite what you may have read before, a 2015 study from Bath university found that eating breakfast DID increase calorie burn through the day – but not because it raised metabolic rate. The researchers found that people who ate breakfast were more physically active. So this could be a good reason, if nothing else.

Why protein helps

There’s no one size fits all approach to breakfast, but if you are eating one then making it high in protein is a smart move. Why? Protein is nature’s appetite suppressant – it keeps you feeling fuller for longer, which means you actually go on to eat fewer calories during the rest of the day.

In one study, overweight adults swapping breakfast cereal for eggs felt less hungry and ate less at lunchtime. The egg eaters also had lower levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin.

Egg breakfasts have also been shown to dampen down hunger, improve glucose control and boost weight loss, when they replace a higher carb breakfast of bagels or pancakes.

So, for a better start to your day, try swapping your breakfast cereal for a couple of eggs.
